Who it's for

Small consultancies / micro-agencies (2–25 people) who today cope by searching email inboxes, Slack threads, Google Drive folders, and asking teammates in chat.

The problem

Time (wasted hours per week searching), billing leakage (re-doing work already done), and legal (finding previous client commitments or license terms quickly for contract disputes).

How to build it

A lightweight desktop agent (macOS/Win) that builds a local encrypted index, plus an optional shared-hosted sync for team indices; connectors for Gmail/Google Drive/Slack/Dropbox and an email-to-index drag-drop UI.

How it makes money

Teams pay a per-seat subscription (~$8–$25/month depending on seats and hosted-sync); they pay because the product directly converts to recovered billable hours and avoids contract mistakes — free options (native Gmail/Drive/Slack search) don't provide unified cross-source search, local-file indexing, nor team-scoped sharing/permissions needed to replace it.

Why it doesn't exist yet

Incumbents (Google Workspace search, Slack, enterprise e-discovery) are either enterprise-priced, cloud-first with poor local-file coverage, or too heavyweight; open-source personal-indexers exist but lack multi-user shared, permissioned sync and the polished connectors/UX that small teams need. An indie can ship a narrow, privacy-first shared index faster than big players because the scope is small (connectors+sync+search UI) and the product targets paying micro-orgs ignored by both enterprise and consumer search vendors.

First users

Early users will be consultancies and freelancer collectives who lose billable time hunting prior work; recruit via indie-hacker communities, agency Slack groups, and a small outreach to 50 consultancies offering a 3-month free pilot — they'll adopt fast because it reduces repeated RFP/proposal drafting time and recovers billable hours.

Build size

2 people x 10 weeks (one full-stack dev to build connectors, local encrypted index, sync and web UI; one frontend/UX+QA to build desktop agent UX, onboarding, and enterprise-lite permission model). Excludes mobile apps, enterprise SSO integrations, and OCR-scanning of paper receipts (MVP indexes text-based docs and attachments).

Biggest risk

Large providers (Google, Microsoft, Slack) could quickly ship a bundled, free cross-source search for small teams or tighten APIs that break connectors; adoption also depends on teams trusting an indie with cross-source search and host-sync.

Conditions for a hit (all 3 required)

• Indexed search result bundle: given a query, returns up to 200 ranked hits across Gmail, Drive, Slack messages, and local files, with result excerpts and a timestamp, within 5s for a 50k-document team index.
• Per-team permissioned sync: a hosted team index shows a membership list and per-file source attribution; new member onboarding sync completes in under 10 minutes for typical 10k-document accounts (observable via team dashboard).
• Local encrypted index + host-sync opt-in: desktop agent stores an AES-256 encrypted index on disk and only uploads encrypted shards to hosted sync; verification via a downloadable integrity manifest showing index size and last-sync timestamp.
